Body Image and Disordered Eating

“It seems like my body is wrong.” No matter how hard you try to find and follow the right diet, do enough of the right exercise, your body has never looked right. Shopping for clothes, going to the pool, or ordering dinner at a restaurant makes you feel like you are in some kind of spotlight, everyone is watching and they must be thinking what I am thinking- “What is wrong with her, doesn’t she take care of herself?”

Every day feels like another battle. You feel like you are killing yourself to meet some kind of expectation for health and attractiveness. You are full of pain every time you notice yourself or feel your own body. The voice inside your head is constantly criticizing every choice you make.

It’s all you think about

“I am uncomfortable in my own skin.”

Every time you see your own reflection you are reminded that you’re supposed to do something to change your body- make it look more like it ‘should.’

Thinner…
More toned…
Less fat there, more muscle here…but not too much muscle

It’s almost like you can see yourself from the outside. The truth is, it’s become unbearable to be in your own body. From every angle, you’re picturing what you look like.

“Something must be very wrong with me.”

My only option is to change my body, right?

How many years have you been stuck in this cycle of self-hate, tracking and questioning everything you put in your mouth, every movement you make? Every now and then you see some ‘results’ but it doesn’t feel completely good. Living in fear that you will gain the weight back makes you think about your body, food, exercise, what other people think all the time.

You’re starting to put words to it. You can feel that you are missing out on being able to fully enjoy people or much of anything you want to. It’s never far from your awareness- “Am I doing the ‘right thing’ right now? How is this going to impact how I look?”

It’s getting harder and harder to be in the moment. Every image, piece of advice, or look from another person hits you with an unbearable weight- everyone sees you and they are judging. It seems like the very air around you confirms that you aren’t what you should be and you have to work harder.

This feeling just might last forever, you can’t escape what’s going on in your head.

The small piece of diminishing hope you carry has you looking for another way

Finding peace in your body and mind

When you say it out loud, you can hear how unrealistic and ridiculous the beauty and health ‘standards’ are. It’s just that in the fear-filled and ‘health’-obsessed culture you live in, saying “That doesn’t seem right” feels like heresy.

When you decide there has to be more to life than constantly being self-critical and spending more time thinking about how your body looks, and less about how you feel in your body I am here for you.

We know what it’s like to listen to critical voices at the cost of your inner knowing.

We also know what it’s like to reconnect with yourself and recognize you have so much more to offer than a visual “ideal”.

Our goal for you is to have the opportunity to remember who you are and think a lot less about what you look like. And in that process we believe you will see someone you like in the mirror.

You will notice things like your cute freckles, or the color of your eyes, or the way your face lights up when you smile. The truth is people are a lot more attractive when they have interesting things to talk about and are interested in the people they are talking to.

Conversations that include talk about diet and self deprecating comments have never been that interesting. You get to choose what matters to you and what you will spend your time and energy on. When you are done letting other people dictate your values you are ready to go on a beautiful journey of healing.

A journey where you get to know the awesome person that is you.
